What is forest carbon monitoring?
Forest carbon monitoring is the ongoing measurement of a forestry carbon project's outcomes across its crediting period. It combines satellite observation of land cover and its change over time with ground measurement of individual trees and plots. Monitoring is not a single event: it recurs on the cycle the methodology specifies, and each cycle produces a monitoring report that feeds independent verification.
Because crediting periods run for decades, the practical test of a monitoring system is not whether it produces a good report this year but whether the record it builds stays internally consistent and queryable across the full period.
What can satellite monitoring establish, and what can't it?
Satellite monitoring establishes coverage: what the land looked like, across the whole project area, at repeated points in time, including before the project existed. What it cannot establish is identity. The distinction determines which questions each data source can answer at audit.

Neither column is sufficient alone, which is why credible monitoring uses both and treats agreement between them as the evidence rather than either one in isolation.
How do satellite and field data corroborate each other?
Satellite and field data corroborate each other when they describe the same parcels on the same timeline. A change signal in imagery over a plot, matched to tagged trees recorded on the ground in that plot at that time, is a far stronger claim than either observation standing alone. That is exactly what a verifier is trying to establish — not that something changed, and separately that someone planted trees, but that the change and the planting are the same event.

How often does a forestry project need monitoring?
Monitoring frequency is set by the methodology the project is developed under, and verification recurs on a defined cycle rather than continuously. What has changed with methodologies such as VM0047 is that the comparison underpinning crediting is itself observed over time, which raises the cost of gaps. A monitoring record with a discontinuity in it is difficult to repair retrospectively, because the observation window has passed.

Monitoring data is audit-ready when a verifier can trace any project-level claim down to the observation behind it, and confirm where and when that observation was made. That is a structural property of how the data was captured, not something added at reporting time. Data collected on paper and transcribed later can be accurate and still fail this test, because the link between the number and its origin is not preserved.
This is the whole argument for digital MRV: capture evidence already bound to a location, a time and a tree, so the report is a view of the evidence rather than a reconstruction of it.
