What does a VCS methodology actually do?
A VCS methodology sets out how a specific type of project quantifies its emission reductions or removals: which carbon pools to count, how to set a baseline, what to monitor, and how to handle uncertainty and leakage. It also sets applicability conditions, which decide whether a given project may use it at all.
The applicability conditions are the part to read first and the part most often read last. They are where a project discovers that its land, its activity or its start date puts it outside the methodology — a discovery that is cheap in week one and expensive during validation.
How do you choose between the land-based methodologies?
The choice follows from what is physically happening on the land. Planting trees where there was no forest is afforestation or reforestation. Protecting forest that would otherwise be cleared is avoided deforestation. Restoring a mangrove is tidal wetland restoration. Changing how existing farmland is managed is agricultural land management. Lengthening a harvest cycle is improved forest management.

Projects frequently sit near a boundary — agroforestry on farmland could resemble ARR or agricultural land management depending on what is planted and where. That is a question the applicability conditions answer, and it is worth answering before the monitoring design is fixed, because the two methodologies ask for different evidence.
What do all of them require, whichever you choose?
Every land-based methodology asks the same underlying questions, which is why the measurement layer can be built before the methodology is finally settled. Each wants a defined project boundary, a defensible baseline, evidence of additionality, monitoring over time that is traceable to specific places and dates, and independent verification of what is claimed.
